From Goat Pastures to Lofts
The Encyclopedia of Chicago describes early Bucktown as a mostly Polish working-class area of small homes, saloons and churches, and says the name supposedly comes from goats that roamed its streets around 1900. The housing now runs from older single-family homes to converted industrial lofts and newer construction. The neighborhood makes up the southeast corner of the Logan Square community area, where about 44 percent of homes are in two- to four-unit buildings and nearly 59 percent were built before 1940. Your trainer plans each workout around the space you actually have, whether that is an open loft floor or a flat's front room.
Holstein Park, Churchill Field and The 606
Holstein Park, at 2200 N. Oakley two blocks east of Western Avenue, has a fieldhouse with two gymnasiums, an outdoor pool, ball fields and a volleyball court; its first brick fieldhouse opened in 1912. Churchill Field Park at 1825 N. Damen is smaller, at 1.39 acres, and doubles as an access point to The 606. That elevated trail runs 2.7 miles along Bloomingdale Avenue, which some definitions treat as the neighborhood's southern edge. Trainers can run intervals on the trail or bring portable equipment to a park lawn.
Kennedy Expressway, Blue Line and Metra
The Kennedy Expressway forms Bucktown's eastern edge, and Western Avenue bounds it on the west. The Blue Line stops at Damen, at 1558 N. Damen, which CTA calls a vital link to Wicker Park and Bucktown, and at Western farther northwest. Metra's Clybourn station, at 2001 N. Ashland on the Union Pacific North line, sits between this neighborhood and the DePaul area. When you travel, virtual training keeps the program going until you are back home.

Bucktown personal training FAQ
Is Bucktown in the Logan Square or West Town community area?
Both, according to the Encyclopedia of Chicago, which places it roughly between North, Ashland, Western and Fullerton avenues. Most of it is the southeast corner of Logan Square, which the Encyclopedia calls that community area's oldest part, while the blocks south of Bloomingdale fall in West Town.
Do you also cover Wicker Park?
Yes. Wicker Park begins just south of Bloomingdale Avenue and The 606, and we train clients there as well; see our Wicker Park page for details on that side of the trail.
Can my trainer use the gym in my loft building?
Where your building allows outside trainers, yes. If it doesn't, sessions happen in your unit with equipment your trainer brings, and every session is insured.
