Two Landmark Districts of Cottages and Flats
Two City landmark districts protect blocks of this part of West Town. The Ukrainian Village District, designated in 2002 and roughly bounded by Haddon, Damen, Rice and Western, includes workers' cottages, two- and three-flats and larger apartment buildings, nearly a third of them built by developer William D. Kerfoot. East of Damen, the East Village District, designated in 2006, is almost 90 percent two- and three-flats, mostly built between 1883 and 1905. These are small-scale buildings, so trainers plan workouts that fit a living room without rearranging the furniture.
East Village, Noble Square and Smith Park
Ukrainian Village proper runs from Division Street to Chicago Avenue between Damen and Western, and Mayor Jane Byrne recognized it as an official neighborhood in 1983. Its landmarks include St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral, SS. Volodymyr and Olha, and Louis Sullivan's Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral. East Village fills the blocks from Damen to Ashland. Noble Square continues east from Ashland toward the Kennedy Expressway, and Smith Park covers Chicago Avenue to Grand between Western and Washtenaw. We train clients in all four.
Parks, Buses and the Blue Line
Smith Park, the 10.2-acre Park District site at 2526 W. Grand, has tennis and pickleball courts, ball fields and a fieldhouse gym. On the Noble Square side, Eckhart Park at 1330 W. Chicago has an indoor pool, two gyms and a fitness center. The Blue Line runs under Milwaukee Avenue on the east side of the area, stopping at Chicago (800 N. Milwaukee, with #56 and #66 buses) and Division (1200 N. Milwaukee). Clients who want recovery work between sessions can add in-home massage from a licensed therapist.

Ukrainian Village personal training FAQ
Where exactly is Ukrainian Village?
The Encyclopedia of Chicago bounds it by Division Street, Damen Avenue, Chicago Avenue and Western Avenue, though some definitions run south to Grand. It is one of several neighborhoods inside the West Town community area.
I rent one floor of a two-flat. Is there room for a real workout?
Usually, yes. Your trainer brings the equipment your program needs and adapts movements to the floor space, and every trainer holds a bachelor's degree plus a nationally accredited certification.
Can I train with my roommate or partner?
Yes. Partner and small-group training lets two or more people share a session, either at home or outdoors at a park like Smith Park.
