A landscape plan that invites a walking warm-up
In 1868, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux were commissioned to plan a new community along the Des Plaines River just west of Chicago, according to the Olmsted Society. Their 1869 plan laid out curvilinear streets that follow the land and the river, with a system of larger parks and 41 small triangular parks and plazas, and the Riverside Landscape Architecture District was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970. A trainer can start a session with a loop on those curving streets before moving into your living room or yard for strength work.
Full workouts inside a pre-1940 home
Riverside's houses are mostly older. CMAP's 2026 snapshot finds 61.7 percent of homes were built before 1940, and the median home dates to 1938. About three in four are single-family detached houses, and the rest are spread across townhomes, two-flats and small apartment buildings, with only about 3 percent in buildings of 20 or more units. A living room, basement or spare bedroom can serve as the training space, and your trainer brings the equipment the program needs, so the room only has to be clear enough to move.
Swan Pond, Schuth's Grove and the Salt Creek Trail
The Des Plaines River runs through the village along an area called Swan Pond. Nearby, the Forest Preserves of Cook County's Schuth's Grove, entered from Cermak Road west of Des Plaines Avenue, has paved pathways and an accessible canoe and kayak landing. Zoo Woods, a Riverside preserve entered from First Avenue south of 31st Street, appears on the Forest Preserves' Salt Creek Trail map, a 16.4-mile network of paved and unpaved trails along the Des Plaines River, Salt Creek and Brookfield Zoo. For trainers coming from the city, Metra's BNSF line stops at 90 Bloomingbank Road.
