Houses, Townhomes and Condo Buildings
Arlington Heights boomed in the 1950s and 1960s and kept building through the 1980s. CMAP's June 2026 snapshot shows about 54 percent of homes are detached houses, while 22 percent are in buildings of 20 or more units. Two in five homes were built between 1970 and 1989. So your trainer might set up in a basement one week and a condo fitness room the next. Sessions work in either, as long as your building allows outside trainers, and the trainer brings the equipment.
Two Metra Stops on the Northwest Line
The village began as Dunton, a depot settlement laid out in 1853 when the railroad added a stop, and the village says that depot-centered downtown remains the heart of the community today. Metra's Union Pacific Northwest line stops at Arlington Heights station, 45 W. Northwest Highway downtown, and at Arlington Park, 2121 W. Northwest Highway, named for the racetrack founded there in 1927. The village is about 23 miles northwest of the Loop, with I-90 along its south edge and Route 53 on its west.
Laps Around Lake Arlington
The Arlington Heights Park District's Lake Arlington is a 50-acre lake ringed by a two-mile path that stays open year-round from sunrise to sunset. The park also has an outdoor exercise area and a boardwalk, which makes it a natural meeting point for interval runs, walking lunges and bodyweight circuits when the weather cooperates. In summer the boathouse rents kayaks and paddle boards, a fun change of pace between sessions. For longer paved mileage, the Forest Preserves of Cook County list Arlington Heights among the towns served by the 12.9-mile Busse Forest Trails.
