The Illinois Prairie Path branches here
This is the junction of the Illinois Prairie Path's inverted Y. The Path's main stem runs from First Avenue in Maywood to Wheaton, then branches toward Elgin and Aurora, part of roughly 61 miles of trail across Cook, DuPage and Kane counties. It follows the old right-of-way of the Chicago, Aurora & Elgin electric railway, and most of the surface is crushed limestone, which the Path's nonprofit describes as easy on feet and quick to dry after rain. For clients who like to train outside, a trainer can meet you at the Path for walking or jogging intervals plus bodyweight strength work.
Herrick Lake and Danada for longer outdoor sessions
Two of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County's larger sites are inside the city. Herrick Lake covers 887 acres, with more than 7 miles of trails for hiking, biking and cross-country skiing and a path around its 22-acre lake that links the parking lots and picnic grounds. Danada, entered from Naperville Road south of Butterfield Road, adds 797 acres of prairie, woods and wetland and nearly 3 miles of the Danada-Herrick Lake Regional Trail. Together they form part of a 3,700-acre chain of open space, with plenty of room for a session outdoors.
Townhomes, condos and two Union Pacific West stops
CMAP's 2026 snapshot shows 58 percent of Wheaton homes are detached houses, while townhomes account for 11.5 percent and buildings of 20 or more units for 13.5 percent. The median home was built in 1976. If your townhome association or condo building has a shared fitness room, a trainer can use it where the rules allow. Metra's Union Pacific West line stops twice in the city, at Wheaton station, 402 W. Front St., and College Avenue, 303 N. President St., on its way to Ogilvie downtown. On days you commute, a trainer can meet you at your office instead of at home.
