Streets that follow the ravines and bluffs
The city was platted in 1857 as one of the earliest picturesque suburban plans in the country, and its street plan still follows the ravines and lake bluffs instead of a grid. About 77 percent of homes are detached single-family houses, with townhomes and buildings of 20 or more units making up much of the rest. Your trainer adapts to the space you have: a home gym, a living room, a condo fitness center or a patio. Equipment arrives with the trainer, so nothing needs to be set up before the first session.
Two Metra lines, Market Square and 20 miles of trails
Lake Forest has two Metra stations on two lines: the Union Pacific North station on North Western Avenue and the Milwaukee District North station on Telegraph Road. Market Square, which opened in 1916, is often cited as the first planned shopping center in the United States. The city's park system adds almost 200 acres of developed parks across 14 sites, 11 miles of bike trails and more than 20 miles of nature and walking trails, and Lake Forest Open Lands says its ten preserves hold over 20 miles of walking trails open to the public year round.
Fort Sheridan, Middlefork Savanna and Mettawa's Wright Woods
The Lake County Forest Preserves' Fort Sheridan preserve covers 317 acres with 3.65 miles of trails, six ravines and three-quarters of a mile of sandy Lake Michigan shoreline. Middlefork Savanna, off Waukegan Road, protects 687 acres of rare tallgrass savanna with 5.5 miles of gravel trails and two boardwalks. In Mettawa, Captain Daniel Wright Woods has a 3-mile loop and sits on the Des Plaines River Trail, with a footbridge across the river to Half Day. In town, Forest Park Beach is a 29-acre city park with walking paths, open year round, with resident entry rules.
