Newer Houses, Ready-Made Training Space
Hawthorn Woods' housing is young by local standards. CMAP's June 2026 snapshot gives a median year built of 1998, compared with 1984 in Lake Zurich and 1988 in Long Grove, and more than one in five homes went up in 2010 or later. Detached houses make up 96 percent of the stock. Whether your space is a finished basement, an unfinished one or a bonus room over the garage, a trainer can lay out a session there and bring every piece of equipment it needs.
Nineteen Village Parks and a Dark-Sky Policy
The village's Parks & Recreation department lists 19 parks, preserves and natural areas, from Acorn Acres Park to the Indian Creek Nature Preserve and the Hawthorn Woods Wildlife Sanctuary. Community Park, at 5 Park View Lane, covers 30 acres with trails and paths, two tennis courts, ball fields and a playground, and from Memorial Day through Labor Day it stays open from sunrise until 8:30 p.m. Hawthorn Woods is also an International Dark Sky Community, so outdoor lighting stays low. We suggest morning or early-evening park sessions in summer and moving workouts indoors once the days get short.
Preserve Trails Off Old McHenry Road
Old McHenry Road, one of the village's main routes, also leads to two connected natural areas. Heron Creek Forest Preserve, at 22890 N. Old McHenry Road below Route 22, has 2.5 miles of gravel trail across 242 acres and opens daily at 6:30 am. Next door, the Long Grove Park District's 50-acre Reed-Turner Woodland Preserve keeps a stretch of original oak and hickory grove with wood-chip walking trails. Heron Creek also has drinking water, toilets and picnic shelters, which helps on a longer outdoor session. Both preserves suit steady walking intervals and outdoor strength circuits.
